Military time numbers the hours of the day from 00 to 23, so there’s no AM or PM. The hour comes first and the minutes second, written as four digits with no colon: 0705 is 7:05 in the morning and 1905 is 7:05 in the evening.

Hospitals, factories, transit and many time clocks use it because a shift that runs past noon or midnight can’t be misread. If your time card prints 24-hour times, this is the quickest way to check a punch before you total the week.

Worked example: three times on both clocks

7:00 AM0700 (07:00)
1:30 PM1330 (13:30)
234511:45 PM

How to convert to and from military time

From 12-hour to military: for times from 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM, add 12 to the hour, so 1:30 PM becomes 1330 and 11:45 PM becomes 2345. For times in the morning, keep the hour and add a leading zero, so 7:00 AM is 0700. The two exceptions are at 12: noon is 1200 and midnight is 0000.

From military to 12-hour: if the hour is 13 or more, take 12 away and write PM, so 1700 is 5:00 PM. If it’s 12, it’s PM (1215 is 12:15 PM). If it’s 00, write 12 AM (0030 is 12:30 AM). Anything else is AM.

Questions

What is 1700 in regular time?

5:00 PM. The hour 17 is more than 12, so take 12 away: 17 − 12 = 5, in the afternoon or evening.

Is midnight 0000 or 2400?

The converter writes midnight as 0000, the start of a new day. Some schedules write 2400 for the very end of a day, which is the same moment; type 0000 to convert it here.

What is 12:30 AM in military time?

0030. The half hour after midnight belongs to hour 00, so it’s written with two leading zeros.

How do you say 0800 out loud?

It’s usually said “zero eight hundred” or “oh eight hundred”. 1430 is “fourteen thirty”.

Why do some time cards use 24-hour time?

Because there’s no AM or PM to mix up. A shift from 1900 to 0700 is clearly an overnight shift, which is easy to get wrong on a 12-hour card.
