It works on any pay amount: an hourly rate, a weekly check or a yearly salary. For hourly pay, add the hours you usually work in a week and it also shows what the raise is worth over a year, which is the number that makes a small hourly change easy to judge.

Money is worked out in cents and rounded once, half up, the same way as the hours calculator on this site. A 3% raise on $18.75 is $19.3125, which becomes $19.31 an hour, and the yearly lines use that rounded rate, as a pay stub would.

Worked example: a 3% raise on $18.75 an hour

Current pay$18.75 an hour
Raise3.00%
New pay$19.31 an hour
Increase$0.56 an hour
A year at 40 hours a week, before$39,000.00
A year at 40 hours a week, after$40,164.80
Difference in a year$1,164.80

How to calculate a raise

From a percent: multiply your pay by the percent and add it on. 3% of $18.75 is $0.5625, so the new rate is $19.31 an hour after rounding. As one step: $18.75 × 1.03.

From a new pay: subtract the old pay from the new, divide by the old pay and multiply by 100. Going from $17.50 to $18.25 is $0.75 more; $0.75 ÷ $17.50 × 100 = 4.29%.

Over a year: multiply the hourly increase by your weekly hours and by 52. A $0.56 raise at 40 hours a week is $0.56 × 40 × 52 = $1,164.80 a year before tax.

Questions

How do I calculate my pay raise?

Multiply your current pay by the raise percent divided by 100, then add that to your pay. For a 4% raise on $22 an hour: $22 × 0.04 = $0.88, so the new rate is $22.88. Or type both into the calculator above.

How much is a 3% raise on $70,000?

$2,100 a year, which takes the salary to $72,100. That’s $70,000 × 0.03. Choose “per year” and “a percent”, then type 70000 and 3 to check it.

What is a 3% raise on $20 an hour?

$0.60 an hour, so $20.60. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks that’s $1,248 more a year before tax.

How do I work out the percent from my new pay?

Choose “the new pay” and type both figures. By hand: (new − old) ÷ old × 100. From $17.50 to $18.25 that’s 4.29%.

Can I check a pay cut?

Yes. Enter a new pay that’s lower than the current one and the increase and the percent show as negative numbers, for example $20.00 to $19.00 is −5.00%.

Does it show my take-home pay?

No. Every figure is gross pay, before tax and deductions. Withholding depends on your own situation, so it isn’t estimated here.
