The Excel file totals the month’s hours with formulas, and works out an estimated gross pay if you add your hourly rate. It deliberately doesn’t split overtime: weekly overtime depends on where each week starts and ends, and calendar weeks rarely line up with the start of a month.
For overtime inside a monthly period, fill in the timesheet online below. It is set to monthly pay periods, shows the month’s dates, and still checks overtime one week at a time, including weeks that run across the start or end of the month.
Worked example: Monthly: November 1-30
$20.00/h · overtime over 40 h a week at 1.5×
| Day | Start | End | Breaks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mon, Nov 2 | 09:00 | 17:00 | none |
| Mon, Nov 30 | 09:00 | 17:00 | none |
| Tue, Dec 1 | 09:00 | 17:00 | none |
16.00 hours (16:00): regular 16.00, overtime 0.00. Estimated gross $320.00: regular $320.00 + overtime $0.00.
What counts in the month
Only shifts on days inside the month belong to it. In the worked example, November shifts on the 2nd and the 30th count, 16 hours in all, while a shift on December 1 starts the next month’s sheet.
A night shift that starts on the last evening of a month and ends the next morning is split at midnight: the hours before midnight belong to the old month, and the rest to the new one. The online timesheet does that split for you.
Questions
Is there a free monthly timesheet template in Excel?
Yes, this one. Download the .xlsx above: 31 rows for the days, a formula for each day’s hours, and the month’s total at the bottom. It also opens in Google Sheets and Apple Numbers.
How do I make a monthly timesheet in Excel?
Make one row per day of the month with columns for the date, start, end, unpaid break and hours, then add a formula for each day’s hours and a SUM at the bottom. This file has all of that set up.
Why doesn’t the monthly sheet show overtime?
Because overtime is usually counted per workweek, and weeks don’t line up with months. Use the online timesheet on this page, which splits each week correctly.
What do I do in a 30-day month or February?
Leave the rows you don’t need blank. Empty rows count as zero hours, so they don’t change the total.
Can I print the month on one page?
Yes. The blank PDF fits all 31 rows, the totals line and the signature lines on one US Letter page.
