Pocket Timesheet

How many work hours are in a year?

A full-time year at 40 hours a week is 2,080 work hours: 40 × 52 weeks. That’s the number most salary-to-hourly conversions use. Your own number can be quite different, so the calculator below starts from the hours you actually work and the weeks you’re actually paid.

Your work hours in a year

2,080.00 hours a year

Average week, over all 52 weeks

weekdays (Monday to Friday) × hours = hours

The calendar count includes holidays. A year with an extra weekday has more working hours than 52 × 40.

Hours change week to week? Pocket Timesheet adds up every shift, so your yearly total isn’t a guess.

Part-time, a 37.5-hour week, or a couple of unpaid weeks off all change the total. 32 hours a week is 1,664 hours a year; 40 hours a week with two unpaid weeks is 2,000. Type your own figures and the year, the average month and the average week update as you go.

There’s a second way to count: by the calendar. 2026 has 261 weekdays, Monday to Friday, so eight hours on each of them is 2,088 hours, eight more than 2,080. The calendar box under the calculator shows that count for this year and next.

Working it out yourself

Multiply your usual weekly hours by the number of weeks you’re paid. Then take off any unpaid days: each one removes a day’s hours. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks with five unpaid 8-hour days, that’s 2,080 − 40 = 2,040 hours.

For an average month, divide the year by 12: 2,080 ÷ 12 = 173.33 hours. That’s a useful figure for comparing a monthly salary with an hourly rate, but no single month has exactly that many working hours.

2,080: 40 hours a week × 52 weeks. Counted by the calendar instead, 2026 has 261 weekdays, which is 2,088 hours at 8 a day.

Does 2,080 hours include holidays?

Yes. 2,080 counts all 52 weeks, holiday weeks included. Whether a holiday is paid depends on your employer; if unpaid days are taken off, enter them under “Unpaid days off”.

8 hours a day over a 5-day week. Over 4 days it’s 10 hours a day.

How many hours is 9 to 5 a week?

9:00 to 5:00 is 8 hours a day, so 40 hours over five days if lunch is paid. With an unpaid 30-minute lunch it’s 7.5 hours a day and 37.5 a week.

Is there a limit on how many hours I can work in a week?

Not under federal law for workers 16 and older: the Department of Labor says the FLSA sets no limit on weekly hours, but hours over 40 in a workweek must be paid as overtime unless the job is exempt.
